چکیده

The energy barrier for the cross slip of screw dislocations in face-centered cubic (FCC) nickel as a function of multiple stress components is predicted by both continuum line tension and discrete atomistic models. Contrary to Escaig's claim that the Schmid stress component has a negligible effect on the energy barrier, we find that the line tension model, when solved numerically, predicts comparable effects from the Schmid stress and the Escaig stress on the cross slip plane. When the line tension model is compared against an atomistic model for FCC nickel, a good agreement is found for the effect of the Escaig stress on the glide plane. However, the atomistic model predicts a stronger effect than the line tension model for the two stress components on the cross slip plane. This discrepancy is larger at higher stresses and is also more severe for the Escaig stress component than for the Schmid stress component. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Activated states for cross-slip at screw dislocation intersections in face-centered cubic nickel and copper via atomistic simulation

We extend our recent simulation studies where a screw dislocation in face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni was found to spontaneously attain a low energy partially cross-slipped configuration upon intersecting a forest dislocation. Using atomistic (molecular statics) simulations with embedded atom potentials, we evaluated the activation barrier for a dislocation to transform from fully residing on the g...

Calculations of intersection cross-slip activation energies in fcc metals using nudged elastic band method

The nudged elastic band (NEB) method is used to evaluate activation energies for dislocation intersection cross-slip in face-centered cubic (fcc) nickel and copper, to extend our prior work which used an approximate method. In this work we also extend the study by including Hirth locks (HL) in addition to Lomer–Cottrell locks and glide locks (GL). Using atomistic (molecular statics) simulations...

Ferromagnetic Ground States in Face-Centered Cubic Hubbard Clusters

In this study, the ground state energies of face-centered cubic Hubbard clusters are analyzed using the Lanczos method. Examination of the ground state energy as a function of the number of particle per site n showed an energy minimum for face-centered cubic structures. This energy minimum decreased in n with increasing coulombic interaction parameter U. We found that the ground state energy ha...

Energy of slip transmission and nucleation at grain boundaries

Grain boundaries (GBs) provide a strengthening mechanism in engineering materials by impeding dislocation motion. In a polycrystalline material, there is a wide distribution of GB types with characteristic slip transmission and nucleation behaviors. Slip–GB reactions are not easy to establish analytically or from experiments; furthermore, there is a strong need to quantify the energy barriers o...
